Strawberry Peak "Mountaineer's Route"
Details
[Cross-posted; you must leave a comment to attend]
This is a scrambling route to Strawberry Peak in the Angeles National Forest near Red Box. While most of it is just trail hiking, there are a couple of sections where we'll have to use our hands to get up rocks. It's not roped climbing, just scrambling. If you aren't familiar with that term, watch some videos.
You don't need scrambling experience as long as you're fit and adventurous. But, you need to watch videos of the route so you know what's involved and make sure you can handle it. If you are familiar with scrambling, this route isn't that difficult. It's at least six miles RT and 2900' of gain so you need to be able to handle that too. This will be about my fifth time taking the route; I'll have a map but probably won't use it that much.
We can use a car shuttle and, if everyone's OK with it, we could also go up and over Lawlor to Barley Flats.
In any case, one car will be parked at Colby Canyon and the other probably at Red Box. Both are subject to break ins so clear everything out of your car.
Bring at least 3L since there's no water on the route. This shouldn't take that long, but also bring a headlamp and a puffer just in case.
We'll meet at 10:30 at Milmada and Flanders **in La Canada**. That way everyone will have a signal. Then, we'll decide the car situation and drive 30 mins to Red Box.
