DAY HIKE- Sheep Peak (LVMC Classic 50 Peak)
Details
This is a trip to summit Sheep Peak, one of the tallest peaks in the Sheep Mountains, and one of the LVMC Classic 50 peaks.
We'll take a relatively easier route from the east. While I've done Sheep Peak before, it was a long time ago, and I didn't take this route. The route I took was longer in both mileage and elevation gain. I found a few GPX files that Harlan uploaded a few years ago on a previous Sheep Peak hike and it looks to be substantially shorter in mileage and elevation gain than the hike I did back in 2013.
There will be a substantial change in temperature throughout the day as we will be starting in the desert and ending at almost 10,000 feet. There was still some snow left in 2013 near the summit.
I will not hike this peak alone as I have always had a fear of big kitties when I am by myself in the middle of nowhere.
A high clearance, preferably a 4WD vehicle will be needed to access the trailhead. I can seat 5 in my vehicle, including myself.
Total Distance: 8 miles round trip
Total Elevation Gain: 3,100 feet
Altitude: 6,750 feet - 9,750 feet
Terrain Description: Mostly class 1 with some class 2 expected. Could be some class 3, but not sure on this route.
Approximate Hiking Time: 8-9 hours
Pacing: Moderate with periodic breaks, including summit time.
