MULTI-DAY TRIP: Mount Lyell
Details
Total Distance: 29 miles round trip
Total Elevation Gain: 4500'
Altitude: 8700' - 13,118'
Terrain Description: Trail for first 12 miles, then snow travel up to summit block, then class 3-4 scrambling
Approximate Hiking Time: 6-8 hours to camp on Saturday 11-14 hours to summit and back, and pack out Sunday
This is a trip to summit Mt Lyell, the highest peak in Yosemite NP, and the high point of Tuolumne County in CA. It is a challenging summit involving steep snow and class 3-4 rock. Do not sign up unless you have experience with crampons/ice axes on steep snow, and are comfortable on class 3+.
The plan is to pack in Saturday morning, set up camp, then get an early start on Lyell Sunday morning. After summitting, we will break camp, and pack out. Depending on time/energy, we may drive home Sunday night, or camp somewhere along the way, and get back Monday morning. Should be a fun adventure!
Ice axes, crampons, helmets, and bear barrels are required.
