Horseshoe Bend & Lake Powell Kayaking – Wander, Paddle & Relax at Your Own Pace
Details
Join us for a laid-back weekend of freedom and natural beauty in Page, Arizona. This is not a guided tour or a packed itinerary—it's your chance to explore two of the Southwest's most stunning landmarks entirely on your own terms, with zero pressure and maximum relaxation.
Saturday – Horseshoe Bend:
Come solo or with friends, arrive when you wish, and soak in one of the most breathtaking views in the Southwest. No schedules, no announcements—just time to breathe, take photos, meditate, picnic, or simply sit and enjoy the silence.
Sunday – Secret Kayak Route to Antelope Canyon (via Lake Powell):
Here's the insider's tip: Most visitors pay 50–50–100+ for crowded, guided tours of Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon. But there's a free way in—by kayaking across the calm waters of Lake Powell and hiking into a peaceful, no-crowds section of the canyon. This route is completely legal and requires no tour, no permit, and no admission fee.
Here's the plan:
- Launch from Antelope Point Public Launch Ramp, about a 15-minute drive from Page. If you have an America the Beautiful National Park Pass, entry to the Glen Canyon Recreation Area is free—otherwise it's $30 per vehicle.
- Kayak across Lake Powell (approx. 1–1.5 hours each way) through a stunning flooded slot canyon. Because it's a no-wake zone, the water is calm and peaceful, with hardly any boat traffic.
- Once you reach the end, beach your kayak and hike another half-mile into the dry slot canyon. You'll walk through the same wavy orange-red sandstone walls that make Antelope Canyon famous—but without the crowds or the entrance fee.
Bring your own kayak, or rent one:
- Rent directly from Antelope Point Marina (approx. $50/day for a kayak). Several outfitters also offer delivery of rental kayaks directly to the launch ramp, so you don't need a roof rack.
- If you bring your own, you can park at the top of the ramp and walk your kayak down the sandy embankment.
Important notes for a safe & successful trip:
- Bring a dry bag for your phone, keys, camera, and valuables.
- Pack plenty of water—the desert sun is intense, and there are no facilities once you're on the water.
- Wear sandals or water shoes—you'll need to wade through shallow water to beach your kayak.
- Stay behind safety barriers at Horseshoe Bend—the drop-off is steep and extremely dangerous.
- DO NOT attempt this kayak trip if you're not a confident paddler. The open-water stretch can be windy, and capsizing on Lake Powell is no joke—life jackets are mandatory and the water is very cold.
What to bring (both days):
- Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
- Plenty of drinking water and snacks
- Camera (and optionally a wide-angle lens for the slot canyon)
- Dry bag if you're kayaking
- Sandals or water shoes for beaching your kayak
- A blanket or chair if you plan to relax at Horseshoe Bend
