Sugarloaf Poetry Hikes are Back!!! (Moderate 6.3 Miles, 1300' gain, About Time)

Details

Hiya!

Long delayed but much desired, poetry hikes are BACK! They have been absent because 1) I suck and 2) I have had way, way too much going on recently. But you know what doesn't suck? Reveling in the fractal infinities of the human condition :)

This hike is a moderate, 6.3-mile loop hike around Sugarloaf Mountain in Maryland with approximately 1250 ft of elevation gain. The hike will start at 10:00 AM from the East View Parking Lot (located here: 39°15'36.9"N 77°23'25.8"W, can also be found by searching for "Sugarloaf Mountain East View Parking" in Google Maps) and meanders through the woods to the White Rocks overlook at 3.5 miles. Here we’ll break for lunch and open-mic poetry! Hikers are highly encouraged to bring a poem and lead it aloud to the group, including your own if you like! Everything is welcome from Shakespeare to Silverstein, no pressure and no judgement! How can we criticize your performance when you have the beautiful meadows, and the Monocacy, and Mountain Maryland as your stage?

After we are done examining the tender yet tempestuous ebb and flow of peace and purpose and what it means to be alive through the beauty of the written word, we’ll pack up lunch and continue the hike. We summit Sugarloaf Mountain itself at 6 miles, before returning back to the parking lot for 6.3 miles total. The total hike time, breaks included, will be 4.5-5 hours; we are anticipating a moderate pace of 1.5-2 mph. Afterwards, we hope you join us for a drink and more examination of the human condition at Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard (https://www.smvwinery.com/).

This hike was heavily inspired by the Sugarloaf Solstice/Poetry Hike held annually by our fellow DC hiking group, the Adventuring LGBTQ+ Outdoors Club. We encourage you to check them out! https://www.meetup.com/Adventuring-LGBTQ-Outdoors-Club/

We hope to see you on the trail!
