2. Cosmos downtown Charlotte (5th and College)

Also, Cosmos is back. Last week after our Thursday class at Center Vibe (1111 Hawthorne Lane) we went to Cosmos. You may remember my former emails about getting the music together at Cosmos by means of two of my favorite DJs (DJ Chaos and DJ Psych) coming on board. I made the recommendation to Tim at Cosmos, asked DJs Chaos and Psychs to give him sample tapes, introduced them to Tim and suggested he add them to the DJ rotation. Well last thursday, DJ Chaos rocked the house, and on Saturday'...

3. Latorrres ... tales from the dance floor "BUT I WAS COOL... YA DIG."

DJ Chaos rocked the house at Latorres on Saturday during the Halloween celebration. I showed up there with three beautiful women (Mariah, Allison, and Heather... Mariah was a Vampire hottie, Allison a Bubble bath - don't ask, and Heather was Heather... in her black dress... I am told that every woman should have a little black dress). My arriving with three women occurred because many of you fellas out there, you need to get your dance groove on. We need you. Fortunately, since I came as Don Juan de Marco, A Spanish aristocrat, and A Mexican land barron... as I was dressed like Clint Eastwood in High Plains drifter, I was up to the task of making sure these ladies had a good time. I know it is a tough job, but somebody has got to do it.

Well low and behold, I was on the dance floor with Mariah (who is a high school guidance counselor by day...if her students only knew how cool she is), and this beautiful Latina woman Mary of Venezuela (she was Mary Mary quite contrary) came up to me and asked me to be her dance partner in the Halloween dance contest. I had never met Mary before, much less danced with her. I was flattered but not sure I wanted to do it, afterall we had never danced together. Well, in that moment... Mariah was wisped off by someone who had his eyes on the Vampire hottie, and Allison was doing her thing on the dance floor and the woman was taking no prisoners (the woman takes her dancing to heart), and Heather in her little Black dress in combination with her shof nuff Salsa skills ( I 'd like to take a little credit for that), was on the floor dancing most of the night. See fellas, in what seemed like a heartbeat, I was now these ladies chaparone. ..See ladies on this list, come out dancing and you will be on the dance floor before you know it. You can count on at least one dance from me to get you started, and then the flood gates will open and you will have so many dance requests, you will find yourself saying: "is this really happening to me?" Yes it is. Just save another dance for me.

Back to Mary Mary quite contrary. We took to the dance floor, and we we pushed the limits. Cross body leads, followed by dips, teasing and just so much fun. We decided, we were just going to go out there and have a good time. No body had more fun on the dance floor than us. I would like to tell you we won; and we should have won that $1,000 prize, but we didn't. We ended up third, but what an adventure. I asked Mary, why she asked me. She said she had 4 partners who said they were going to be there to be in the contest with her.. nobody showed. Then she saw me and remembered me from seeing me teach and dance at Cosmos. So, she made a beeline straight in my direction, thinking "with him.. we could do this." Well we were dancing and chatting, and she chatted me up big time in SPANISH... Now I don't speak as much Spanish as I should, even though may dancing suggest that I was born and raised in Cuba, the Domincian Republic, Columbia, or Ven.... But I am a Black man from the USA, and we have an unwritten code ... one that is passed on from generation to generation: " To be cool no matter what." So when the woman started talking to me in Spanish, I was so cool, I didn't even flinch, you'd think Spanish was my first language. If Mary is reading this, she now knows I didn't understand a word she said: but on another deeper level, I did .. my soul did. Which brings me to Salsa de Soul. Man, you Latinas are going to make me master this Spanish language yet.

4. Salsa De Soul

Lots of teachers focus on patterns. That is good, but it has its limitations. The major limitation is that often you can only dance with people who know the patterns you know. But if you know some patterns, and you are rooted in the music and the essential elements of the dance in question (salsa, merengue, bachata, reggaeton..yes reggaeton), then you can dance with anyone. Mary said: " you want to dance salsa on one (LA style) or on two (NY style)?" As a former musician who played with latin bands, I know that if you can hear the music... (your soul does), if you can dance from the inside out, from your heart, you can dance with anyone on any beat. And that is what we did.

So we are bringing Salsa to Lake Norman.. tonight is a free intro ... with classes beginning next Tuesday. Our classes are taught at the Harbor Salon and Spa...(exit 33 off I 77) in the Lake Norman Mooresville area (one of my childhood homes). As TS Elliot says in the Four Quartets: "and the end of all exploration is to come to that place where you began and know it for the first time."

Join us tonight at 7:30 pm. after the Zumba class finishes, and learn in a fun fashion you never thought possible. Harbor Salon and Spa 552 Williamson Road [masked] 4240.

5. Salsa Boot camp for children, beginners, and advanced students... November 14.. Save the date.

Well, I am off. Thanks for all you do for Latin dance.

See you on the dance floor,

"the Cat in the Hat"

In the next email, I will let you know about this fabulous weekend of activities.
