Imagine a partner who is always available, never judges you, remembers everything you've told them, and is designed to make you feel loved.

Some see AI companions as a source of comfort and connection; others worry about emotional dependence, manipulation and companies profiting from people's attachment. The question is whether these relationships are fundamentally different from human ones — and, if so, whether that matters.

We'll start with a short reading (about 20 minutes) to set the scene, then open the floor.

We'll discuss questions such as:

  1. Can a relationship with an AI be meaningful, even if the AI doesn't feel love?
  2. Is an AI companion helping you if it makes you feel less lonely today but less able to connect with people tomorrow?
  3. If an AI makes you genuinely happy, does it matter that its affection is simulated?
  4. When does an AI relationship become exploitation, and who should decide?

No background needed, just curiosity and an open mind.

Format: ~20 min reading + ~1 hour 40 min discussion.

Venue note: We're meeting at a restaurant, so please order at least one drink to support the venue. Thanks!
