When we hear the word “Mysticism,” different unique visions come to our minds—the ascent up the Tree of Life of the Kabbalah in Judaism, the whirling Dervishes of Rumi in Islam, the Apostle Paul’s blinding light upon the road to Damascus in early Christianity, the stigmata of St. Francis and visions of Hildegard of Bingen in Catholicism, the hesychast prayers of the faithful in Eastern Orthodoxy, the spiritual ascent of the Bodhisattvas of Buddhism and gurus of Hinduism, the ecstatic utterances of the Pythia at ancient Greek and Roman oracles, and the spirit possession of shamans, witchdoctors, and wise one from all over the world. The idea Mysticism appears to mean different things to different people at different periods of time, but are these ideas really so different? What are the connections between them all in the realm of their shared phenomenology, their perceived union with the ultimate reality through ecstatic and intuitive experience?
Join us as we venture into the cornucopia of mystical experiences throughout history within different beliefs and religions, dancing upon topics that are often never discussed and realizing threads of connectedness that may redefine your understandings of what Mysticism is all about, and, perhaps, you may have a mystic-like epiphany of your own!
