Week 8
CHAPTER 5: MIND THE GAP: CULTIVATING CHANGE AND CLOSING THE
DISENGAGEMENT DIVIDE
To mind the gap is to become very aware of the differences between the life we aspire to live and the one we are currently living. As leaders in our professional and personal lives, we are holding up a standard for all to aspire to, and sometimes our own shortcomings peak louder than our words. We must learn first to see this and then develop strategies
to engage it with vulnerability.

CHAPTER 6: DISRUPTIVE ENGAGEMENT: DARING TO REHUMANIZE WORK
In this chapter, Brown recognizes the disruptive nature of vulnerability but suggests that it is worth the effort and discomfort. Our workplaces and families are being stifled by shame. This is not only limiting our work – it is also limiting our personhood.

Week 10
CHAPTER 7: WHOLEHEARTED PARENTING: DARING TO BE THE ADULTS WE
WANT OUR CHILDREN TO BE/FINAL THOUGHTS
Brown uses this final chapter on parenting to solidify her points and research. We all have experience with the effects of shame in parenting; we have been parented, or we are a parent, or both. Brown makes the case that we cannot lead someone to a place we have never been. Whether as a parent or as a leader in another field, this is a great leadership truth. We must work to become the leaders that we want others to become.
