Elijah’s story takes place during a time when Israel was deeply entrenched in idol worship, specifically the worship of Baal, a pagan god. Ahab, the king of Israel, had married Jezebel, a Phoenician princess who worshipped Baal and actively promoted its worship across Israel. This led the nation away from God, and the people were torn between serving the Lord and following Baal.
God raised up Elijah as a prophet during this period of spiritual decline to call Israel back to faithfulness. Elijah’s mission was to confront the evil of Baal worship and declare that Yahweh (the God of Israel) alone was the true God.
