In the Lean Startup Methodology, they break out the Customer development process into four segments: Customer Discovery, Customer Validation, Customer Creation and Customer Scale. When I ask entrepreneurs if they have talked to customers, they say "Yes, I have talked to a lot of people, I am I am getting a lot of positive response!"

However, after digging into the facts of their exploration, they have a very clear idea of the product, and they demo the product as it is and ask if people would buy it. Of the 10 people they talked to 7 of them said warm and fuzzy things.

And then they are surprized when they get out into the world with the product and they are unable to sell it at all.

They were fully in the middle of the Customer creation conversation having skipped the discovery and validation parts of the effort and were surprized when they had no foundation to there efforts.

This is important enough to do that a VC has put together a deal. If you do 100 customer discovery conversations and tell them about your progress, they will give you an investment of $5000 at a $1M evaluation. See this link:

Are you willing to sell .5% of your company for the data on your Customer Discovery efforts?

We will explore the process of doing Customer Discovery Conversations. This is a workshop, where we will practice the process and set up goals for moving forward.

John Sechrest will lead this workshop. He is the Founder of the Seattle Angel Conference and coorganizer of the Lean Startup Seattle, Seattle Open Coffee and active in the Startup Community.

Lean Startup Seattle is for anyone interested in the application of Lean Startup Principles and the Customer Development process developed by Steve Blank and refined by Eric Ries. We are bringing the Seattle Lean Startup community together in a variety of formats to learn from each other.
