Most transformation stories celebrate success. This session explores the failures, the false starts, and the transformation theatre. Join an honest discussion on why change rarely sticks and what leaders can do differently. Interested in joining the panel? We’d love to hear your story.

## From Car Crashes to Train Wrecks: The Ugly Stories of Business Transformations (and What to Do About Them)

Most conferences celebrate success stories.
This session does the opposite.

Every year, organisations spend billions on transformation programmes, agile transformations, digital initiatives, operating model redesigns, AI adoption, and culture change efforts. Yet many fail to deliver the promised outcomes. Some quietly disappear. Some survive long enough to be declared a success before slowly evaporating. Others become expensive exercises in organisational theatre that consume energy, attention, and goodwill without creating lasting change.

Why is it so difficult to make change stick?

Why do so many well-funded and well-intentioned transformation efforts struggle to achieve their goals?

Why do organisations repeatedly encounter the same obstacles despite decades of accumulated experience, frameworks, methodologies, and expert consultants?

And most importantly: what can we learn from these stories?

In this special LeanTech Circles panel discussion, we will explore the uncomfortable realities of business transformation. Rather than focusing on polished case studies and success narratives, we will examine real experiences of initiatives that underperformed, stalled, lost momentum, or failed entirely.

Together, we will explore recurring patterns, including:

  • Transformation as theatre rather than genuine change
  • Leadership behaviours that unintentionally undermine change
  • The gap between strategy and execution
  • Organisational inertia and resistance
  • Why adoption remains harder than implementation
  • The challenge of sustaining improvements over time
  • The hidden costs of large-scale transformation programmes
  • How organisations create complexity faster than they eliminate it
  • What successful change efforts do differently

This session is not about assigning blame. It is about learning from reality.

Through candid discussion, audience participation, and collective reflection, we will identify the patterns that repeatedly derail transformation efforts and explore practical approaches for creating change that survives beyond the launch event, steering committee, or programme closure report.

### Call for Panellists

We are looking for leaders, practitioners, consultants, coaches, product leaders, transformation professionals, and change agents willing to share their experiences.

  • Have you been involved in a transformation that failed to achieve its ambitions?
  • Have you seen programmes that generated activity but little meaningful change?
  • Have you watched successful initiatives slowly fade away once attention moved elsewhere?
  • Have you learned important lessons from transformations that did not go according to plan?

If so, we would love to hear from you.

The goal is not to name and shame organisations, but to create an honest conversation about the realities of change and the lessons we can all learn from them.

If you would like to join the panel, please reach out and share a brief summary of your experience and the story you would like to bring to the discussion.
Sometimes the most valuable lessons come not from our successes, but from the transformations that went wrong.
