Swing into the vibrant world of Lindy Hop with us!
The Swing Era are a professional dance company based in Moseley, Birmingham and we run 6 week courses in Lindy Hop on a Thursday evening to teach you all the basics in a friendly class environment.
Lindy Hop is an African American dance that started in the late 1920’s and was danced to Big Band swing music throughout the 30’s and 40’s. It is a partnered dance that encompasses the Charlestown, jazz, tap dance and a whole lot of fun!
You can either dance as Lead (typically the role that initiates the movements and direction) or the Follow (typically the role that interprets and responds). Lead and Follow aren’t gendered roles and you are welcome to sign up for either! You can sign up with a partner as a balanced Lead/Follow Couple, or you can sign up by yourself as either role and we will partner you in class. We rotate partners throughout the class, so you will have the chance to dance with everyone.
Partnered dancing is all about working together to make decisions on how the dance will evolve, as Lindy Hop is an improvised co-creation - there is no 'set' choreography, social dancing is all about linking together all the different moves in the Lindy repertoire, so it's different every time... and lots of fun!
Our next Level 1 Beginners Course starts on Thursday 26th June and runs for 6 consecutive weeks at St Columba Church. We are giving you the opportunity to try our classes first without committing to the full six weeks, for just £8.
