Designing in the Site Editor: A WordPress Block Theme Exploration
Details
Have you ever wanted to design a custom theme--either for yourself, for a client, or to submit to the WordPress theme repository?
Are you interested in block themes and how they are designed?
Did you know it's possible to design a custom theme using only the site editor, with very little additional code?
This online workshop is an intermediate-level collaborative exploration of creating block themes using the site editor.
Join Sarah Snow and help her explore the in's and out's of designing a block theme using the site editor--and using only a tiny bit of theme.json code!
You Will Learn...
- The key files that make up a block theme behind-the-scenes (and see how quickly a block theme canvas can come together!)
- Some important settings in your block theme's theme.json that switch on important tools for you as a theme designer (appearanceTools, Layout, and Color: Palette) and how they help you in the site editor
- How to create and use a style guide in the site editor to help you plan your theme before the heavy lifting begins
- Some limitations of designing in the site editor new theme designers should be aware of (such as the use of images, fonts, and heading stylings)
If there is time, we will also explore other block themes and analyze them together for best theme design practices.
To get the most out of this workshop, you should be familiar with block themes and comfortable navigating the site editor. If you're not sure if that describes you, check out our courses on learn.wordpress.org, specifically around using the Site Editor. You can get started learning about the site editor here!
