The Hockey Stick Effect and Thriving in Retirement
Details
Hockey and Minnesota go together like hot chocolate and marshmallows, but what is the hockey stick effect and what does it have to do with retirement? Good question!
The hockey stick effect—where change is slow at first, then suddenly accelerates at an inflection point—is a great metaphor for how we learn to thrive in retirement. It also offers an optimistic, useful perspective that can be applied to collective, societal shifts.
Maybe an optimistic perspective is just what we need right now.
None of us expect life to be smooth sailing 100% of the time, but we do want to thrive in this chapter, and we do care about the welfare of our society and future generations. When times are especially challenging, how do we make our way through?
How do we manage our response to uncertainty that often leads to ruminating about the past or worrying about the future? What about the politicians we don’t like, our serious concerns about the economy, the environment, rise of AI technology, global unrest, and more. How do we handle all of that? And when day-to-day living sometimes just feels dull, excessively routine, or downright stressful – how do we move out of that space?
Join us for a discussion about how each of us might apply the hockey stick effect in our own lives to achieve our aspirations and goals. We’ll talk about how small, steady efforts may feel insignificant until they don’t – when suddenly they compound into rapid, visible change.
Please bring a favorite quote or aphorism that has provided you with guidance or inspiration, to share with the group. Sometimes a few wise words are what we need to keep moving forward with energy and commitment.
As always, we look forward to engaging discussion and creating community as we learn from each other, evolve, and grow in this chapter of our lives. If you are able, join us for a social hour after our discussion at a local restaurant.
