'A' Walk - Lockton to Goathland
Leader - James
This is a varied linear walk of about 13 miles and 1500 feet of ascent, on good tracks throughout.
Alighting the coach on the A169 at Lockton, our route initially descends to Levisham Beck and proceeds in a northerly direction to arrive at the spectacular Hole of Horcum. From here we descend into Newton Dale, cross the NY Moors Railway and climb up Needle Point into Wilden Moor Plantation. Emerging from the forest at Wardle Green we climb up to Simon Howe, the high point of the walk, and continue northward to descend to Mallyan Spout and Beck Hole before reaching our destination.
"B" Walk - Leader - Lynn
The B walk will be approx 9 miles with 429m of ascent and 448m of descent. Good paths, some picturesque road walking, woodland and working farmland.
Walking from the center car park in Goathland we will follow the road through and take a short diversion uphill for the first view, descend back down to the road where we will meet the descending path down to West Bank bottom, some steep steps down (weather permitting, if wet there is an alternative route).
Walking along the Beck bottom and Scar Wood we will arrive at Mallyan Spout Waterfall which cascades 70ft from above us. After this we will continue at the edge of Carr Wood and Coombs Wood where the atmosphere is magical. We will reach Beck Hole and have lunch here in this picturesque hamlet.
Following the road around and uphill to Hollin Garth and Braithwaite cottages we will follow the path with good veiws then through woodland we will pass through working farms and the Esk Valley reaching Grosmont church and steam railway station, hopefully see a steam train.
Then we will make our return journey following the old railway path back to Beck Hole where time permitting we might take a path to Thomasin Foss waterfall and then return to Goathland.
"C" Walk - Leader - Sarah. Details will be given on the coach.
"D" Walk - Leader - Roger
Goathland Circular via Beck Hole and the Railway Incline
From the car park we follow the cinder track of the old railway to Abbots House camp site and over the common to Goathland church and the Mallyan Spout hotel. We then follow a stepped path down into the valley of the West Beck. Mallyan Spout waterfall is a short distance upstream but it is a rocky scramble only recommended for the sure-footed. Following the West Beck downstream brings us to the pretty hamlet of Beck Hole, our lunch stop. After lunch we climb the tree-lined cinder bed of the old railway incline back into Goathland, leaving time to visit the historic station.
About 5 miles, 350ft of gradual ascent and descent, some steps but no stiles.
Those who have walked with us before should note that from 1st January 2022 we brought our conditions into line with those of the parent club, Leeds CHA Rambling and Social Club, where newcomers can attend their first three walks free of charge to see if the group is suitable for them, but if they wish to continue we ask them to join the club and pay the annual subscription (only £6 a year!).
Only a small selection of our walks are posted on the Meetup site but paid up club members have access to our full programme which includes one or two walks each Saturday, and a choice of up to three walks on Sundays (including up to four coach trips a year so you can relax and chat on the journey without having to drive). Also we normally arrange one or two walking weekends away each year so there is something to suit everyone.
