Penhill Beacon and Coverdale Round (approx 14 miles)

Details

You are most welcome to join us on this circuit exploring one of the lesser known Yorkshire Dales, incorporating a fine high-level walk over Penhill. The walk commences in Carlton in Coverdale, which can be reached from the A684 though Leyburn in Wensleydale, taking a left turn at West Witton to Melmerby. Pass though this village and turn right to Carlton, reaching the village in about a mile. (As an alternative, Carlton can be reached by taking the road from Kettlewell in Wharfedale, over Park Rash into Coverdale) Roadside Parking is available near the Forresters Arms, from where we plan to start walking at 10.00am, so please allow sufficient time for travelling and changing into boots, etc, and come appropriately attired and equipped for the conditions expected.
From the village, our route take us over Melmerby Moor to the West Witton Road, to ascend to the summit of Penhill Beacon, which is a great viewpoint for Wensleydale and surrounding hills. We continue over the Height of Hazeley and Harland Hill, to pick up the bridleway from Waldendale which crosses Fleensop Moor to descend into Coverdale at Braidley. A short walk down the valley is followed by a climb up onto Arkleside Moor, from where we take the bridleway over Swineside Moor to West Scrafton. The final section crosses the River Cover back to Carlton.
The route is about 14 miles in length, with some 2200 feet of ascent, and is fairly strenuous. We expect to finish between 5 and 5.30pm.

This is a Leeds CHA walk, and there is no charge to attend the first three walks, but to attend further walks we request that you join our club for an annual membership of only £6.00. This will give you access to an unlimited number of walks, social events, coach trips, and weekends away, in line with our parent club Leeds CHA Rambling & Social Club. for further details follow the link on this website.
