Denholme & the Worth Valley
Details
Details
You will be most welcome to join us on this varied walk in Pennine country, from the former mill town of Denholme, passing several scenic reservoirs, and crossing over two huge viaducts to follow tracks above the Worth Valley with its views of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. The walk will take us on sections of the Worth Way, the Millennium Way and the Bronte Way, through a landscape rich in historical architecture.
We plan to start walking at 9.45am, so please allow sufficient time for travelling and changing into boots, etc, and come appropriately attired and equipped for the conditions expected. The walk will commence from Forster Park in Denholme (Grid Ref SE 072339), where on street parking is available on Parkinson Road, which is just off the A629 Main Road.
This is a Leeds CHA walk of up to 12 miles, with approximately 1400 feet of ascent, on good tracks throughout. We expect to finish between 4.00 and 4.30pm.
The Route
From the Dean Brow area south of Denholme, a choice of paths descend to Doe Park Reservoir, now used for water sports. The track on the eastern side is followed to the dam, which is crossed to join a link path to the Millennium Way. The Millennium Way is followed to a point above the scenic Hewenden Reservoir, where we join the Great Northern Railway Trail to cross the massive Hewenden viaduct with splendid views all around. The GNR trail continues over another huge viaduct approaching Cullingworth, but there is no further right of way on the former railway route.
Paths and tracks through Cullingworth lead to Cullingworth Fields, Field Head Farm and the Flappit Spring crossroads, where a short road walk leads to Brow Top, where we join the Worth Way path, which is followed over moorland to the Worth Valley. The Worth Way contours above the valley, above Oxenhope with views over the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, to Dark Lane where tracks lead down to join the Millennium Way past Leeming Reservoir. We now join the Bronte Way path to skirt Thornton Moor Reservoir, and follow Thornton Moor Road to a point where a track descends to Denholme, near to the starting point.
There is no charge to attend the first three Leeds CHA walks, but to attend further walks we request that you join our club for an annual membership fee of only £6. This will give you access to an unlimited number of walks, social events, coach trips and weekends away, in line with our parent club Leeds CHA Rambling & Social Club.
