What shall we see? A Fairburn Ings ramble

This is a CHA C walk of approx. 6.5 miles. It is a linear walk starting from near Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve and finishing in Allerton Bywater. The route is mostly level on good paths with a couple of short stretches of road and there are some stiles. The route starts at the Allerton Ings bus stop on the A656 and follows the Aire and Calder Navigation downstream for half a mile or so before passing under an old railway bridge to join the footpath to Newton Lane and the entrance to Fairburn Ings Visitor Centre. Depending on time we will have lunch there, or a bit further on. From the Visitor Centre we head back down towards the river and join the high level path passing several of the wildlife ponds and with good views over the Aire valley. We then return to the river and Navigation before crossing the main road and heading upriver to Allerton Bywater and the bus back to Leeds.

Catch the 10.00 no 168 bus from Corn Excange D on Vicar Lane, meeting at the Allerton Ings bus stop at 10.42. Returning to Leeds, the 168 is hourly and 163 half hourly (but takes longer)
