Thornhill Edge - Whitley Lower - Coxley Valley

This varied and scenic ride takes us along the river (or canal) path from Pugneys lake to Horbury Bridge, and then up to Thornhill Edge where there are open views. We then continue in an anti-clockwise loop passed Whitley Lower, Briestfield, Upper Denby, Middlestown, Coxley and Netherton on a series of bridle paths and quiet lanes. This finally takes us down to the canal from where we make our way back to Asda.
Post ride refreshment is available at the nearby Star Inn.
Lunch: There is no cafe stop so you will need to bring your own food.
Time: 10:00 for 10:15 departure.
Meet: Asda, Sandal, Wakefield, WF2 7EQ. Meet close to the recycle bins area - turn right immediately before the Asda filling station and then right just after the bins.

Distance: 26 miles.
Duration: 4½ hours, including stops (estimated)
Technical difficulty: BLUE (Moderate), much of it is non-technical but there are some uneven surfaces and a couple of bumpy descents though not severe and easily avoided by walking the bike down.
Physical difficulty : RED (Difficult), very hilly apart from the river/canal sections, about 2,500ft total (aggregate) ascent, so a good level of fitness required if on an unassisted bike.
Suitable For: Mountain bikes only (hardtail is fine).
Recommendations: Spare tube, Tools, Pump, Lunch, Energy bars/drinks, Water.
Safety: No Helmet = No Ride!
