Silences of the personal variety - the author's father regarding his experience as a Japanese prisoner of war, the majority white population in Tasmania regarding the genocide of the native people who lived on that land, the link between an obscure HG Wells book, the understanding of the mechanics of nuclear chain reaction and of course the bomb - specifically the ones that were used over Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
This is personal and political, yet it's beautifully written, free from polemics. You feel the author drawing out his explorations, his thoughts, his understandings, the complexity of your emotions.
What might your journey look like? What connections might you make as you travel? Are such journeys part and parcel of what makes us human?
