Join us at the beautiful Leeds Minster for an uplifting early-evening concert featuring music from two of the best-loved works in the choral repertoire:
Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace and Haydn’s Nelson Mass.

St Peter’s Singers will be joined by a larger Come and Sing choir, who will have spent the afternoon rehearsing these wonderful works together before giving a performance at 5.00pm.

### What will we hear?

From Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, the programme includes movements such as The Armed Man, Kyrie, Sanctus, the hauntingly beautiful Benedictus, Agnus Dei and God Shall Wipe Away All Tears.

Composed against the backdrop of conflict and dedicated to the victims of war, The Armed Man combines the traditions of the Christian Mass with other texts to create a powerful plea for peace. The work also has a particular connection with Leeds: it was commissioned by the Royal Armouries and received its first performance in 2000.

We will also hear selected movements from Joseph Haydn’s Nelson Mass (Missa in angustiis), including the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei. Written in 1798 during a period of war and uncertainty in Europe, it moves between dramatic intensity and wonderfully joyous, uplifting music.

Although both pieces emerged from times overshadowed by war, they ultimately offer music full of hope, beauty and humanity.

You certainly don’t need to know classical or choral music to enjoy this event. If you have never heard a large choir singing live before, this should be a particularly accessible introduction — and Leeds Minster provides a wonderful setting in which to experience it.

We’ll arrange a Meetup point at the Minster before the doors open so that we can go in together.
