"A hidden treasure up above the Manifold Valley"

I recently discovered this beautiful walk and hidden treasure of Throwley Old Hall and so wanted to share it with you...

'Throwley Old Hall is a ruined stately home near the village of Calton and adjacent to the River Manifold, in north-east Staffordshire, England. It is a Grade II* listed building and a scheduled monument. The estate is privately owned'

Liz has kindly offered to join me on this walk and please if you are unable to attend don't worry as I will be offering it on a Saturday in Summer. It is a recce although I have walked it last week but guided by a couple of friends.

I just want to sneak a little walk in prior to my Spanish Tour to Spain...

We start at the National Trust car park by Ilam Hall walking down onto 'Paradise Way' and along the river. (Free to National Trust Members with permit) £4.50 for up to 4hrs parking, £6 for over 4hrs.

You can park on the lane in the village but ensure you are in the allowed area.

Toilets at National Trust Centre. None on the walk sorry.

Wild garlic should still be in bloom with lots of Spring Flowers.

Starting from Ilam Hall we then head up to Throwley Old Hall with a break for morning coffee and photo opportunities.

We then follow various tracks along open countryside, woodlands and parts of the Manifold Way

Approx 7 - 8 miles

Awesome views

Good walking boots essential - sticks may be handy for descent

We walk at a nice steady pace with a break for refreshments so bring a flask/water and a picnic.

Should be finish by approx. 2 for a nice coffee and cake at the National Trust cafe.

"Tegg's Nose is a hill east of Macclesfield in Cheshire, England. It has a short ridge with a high point of 380 metres (1246 feet) "

This is a medium fitness walk due to to a slightly steep but achievable ascent with a nice steady pace

Here is a little information about Tegg's Nose Country Park...

"Discover Tegg’s Nose Country Park and experience Cheshire’s wild hill country where rock dominates the landscape. Dry stone walls and sturdy barns add to the dramatic character of the steeply sided valleys while many of the hill tops are pitted with old quarries.

Quarrying was certainly happening at Tegg’s Nose in the 1500’s and continued until 1955. Men blasted, hammered, hacked and chiselled away at the rock in harsh conditions for low wages.

Today nature has softened the scars of industry and there is plenty to see at Tegg’s whatever time of year. You don’t have to go far to enjoy exhilarating views over the Cheshire Plain and on a clear day you can see Liverpool’s cathedrals and Welsh hills beyond.

Why "Tegg’s Nose"? Early maps show the area as Tegge’s Naze. This may have come from Tegge, an early Norse Settler and ‘nose’ meaning a promontory or it may be that the hill originally looked like a sheep or ‘teg’.

The walk begins in the pay and display Tegg's Nose Car Park with an awesome cafe to finish with delightful tea and cake.

WHAT AN AWESOME CHALLENGE THIS IS FOR ANY PERSON SERIOUS ABOUT UK MOUNTAIN WALKING!

Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England, at an elevation of 978 metres above sea level. It is located in the Lake District National Park, in Cumbria, and is part of the Southern Fells. Not only is hiking up Scafell Pike modestly challenging, it has invariably been described as exhilarating, beautiful and breath-taking.

The terrain offers high level walking on certain paths with a little scrambling. You must have a good head for heights. Medium fitness is vital and you should be accustomed to mountain walking. A suggest kit list will be provided and it is vital you wear good walking boots or shoes.
