The spread of AI to most human activities, combined with robotisation in manufacturing and transport, will cause the loss of some 30% of the world’s workforce, according to serious studies. In reality, no one knows. New jobs will be created. But if the productivity of systems operating 24-7-365 delivers enough goods to satisfy humanity’s needs within the planet’s limits, it’s not that jobs will be replaced but that much of human labour won’t be needed.
If goods are not allocated according to the contribution of human labour and of financial capital, how should it be? One answer is that such distribution should meet human needs without other considerations – but how to define ‘needs’? Or that some fixed income should be paid to all, irrespective of their contribution to society. Or rather than direct payments, that services should be made available to all for free. But will not any free allocation of goods reinforce the existing inequalities across the globe – one better be a subsidised citizen of Britain than of Burundi?
Let’s discuss the next phase in human economic evolution.
