Do we need a new narrative for the future?
This discussion will explore whether we need a new story about who we are, where we are going, and what kind of society we want to build - one that restores a sense of belonging, purpose and hope, bringing us closer together as a society and as humanity. At its heart lies the question of how we can protect human dignity and the common good, ensuring that our collective future is shaped not only by technological progress and economic interests, but by the well-being of all people and the values that enable us to flourish together.

As global crises intensify and artificial intelligence rapidly transforms how we live, work and experience the world, questions about social cohesion, belonging and our shared future are becoming increasingly important. In the aftermath of the pandemic and amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and growing political and cultural divisions, many people feel disconnected from traditional institutions and established political narratives. Across Europe, expressions of discontent raise questions about how different generations and communities understand their place in society, respond to economic uncertainty and envision the future.

How can we develop a new narrative that brings people together rather than creating new divisions? One that meets people where they are, speaks meaningfully to younger generations, and offers hope and a positive vision of the future rather than simply warning of impending crises? As some begin to explore the idea of a new shared belief system, what can we learn from religious traditions, and from those who do not identify with religion, about the values that unite us?
