LCC visits William Morris Gallery
Details
Join us for a visit to the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow, an inspiring journey through the life, art, and radical politics of one of Britain’s most influential socialist thinkers.
William Morris wasn’t just a designer and craftsman, he was a passionate advocate for social justice, equality, and the dignity of labour. He pioneered a revolutionary approach to labour, one that had to be useful, beautiful and creative and “not far removed from a blessing” in contrast to the dull, alienating and exploitative labour which is a “mere curse, a burden to life”. Today rise of AI raises the same question: is technology freeing people from burden or is it just another curse further deepening alienation?
Together, we’ll explore how Morris connected art, politics, and everyday life, challenging the dehumanising effects of early and late capitalism. Expect thoughtful discussion, good company, and plenty of inspiration for anyone interested in the intersection of art, beauty and socialism.
This October, William Morris Gallery is also presenting the exhibition Women in Print: 150 Years of Liberty Textiles. Tracing the rich history of Liberty Fabrics, the exhibition surveys the evolving influence and status of women in textiles over the past 150 years. Women in Print brings together iconic patterns by designers such as Althea McNish, Susan Collier and Sarah Campbell, and Lucienne Day, alongside previously overlooked names, celebrating how women have been — and continue to be — at the heart of Liberty’s creative innovations and ongoing relevance today. Thank you to Talha for pointing out this exhibition which makes a visit worth it even if you’ve already been to the gallery!
Event plan
We will meet in front of the gallery around 2pm and then head together inside by 2:15pm. We’ll stay together as a group while visiting the exhibition, but if you’d like to check anything out individually, feel free to do so and rejoin us later: we’ll be sharing our location throughout the event.
After the gallery visit, we’ll head to a nearby pub for a relaxed debrief and social. This will be a chance to hang out, discuss the man and connect! As always all are welcome and please feel free to bring a friend or comrade.
Please note, we are committed to making every one of our events welcoming and safe for everybody. Our spaces are non-partisan, but not apolitical. Racism, fascism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, antisemitism, classism, and any other forms of discrimination based on preference or identity are not tolerated. If you are a victim of bigotry or harassment at any of our events, please raise this with an organiser, who will act appropriately. We broadly follow this code of conduct
