Book Club at Night! by Leftist-Progressive-Night-Out
ANT Bookstore & Cafe, 345 Clifton Ave., Clifton, NJ, USWelcome to the Leftist-Progressive Book Club at Night! For our next meeting, we'll be discussing the book
Antifa: The Anti Fascist Handbook by Mark Bray (2017)
We'll be exploring the following themes, among others:
Defining Fascism & Antifa: According to Bray, how does "antifa" differ from, or align with, more liberal or conservative forms of anti-fascism, such as those aiming to defend democratic institutions?
The Ethics of Violence: Based on the book's arguments, is proactive, militant action (or "physical force" against fascists) an effective or morally justifiable strategy to prevent the rise of far-right movements?
Historical Lessons: What lessons does the book draw from European and American history regarding the success or failure of confrontational anti-fascism?
The "No Platform" Strategy: Bray discusses the concept of preventing far-right groups from organizing in public spaces. What are the arguments for and against this tactic?
Secrecy and Structure: The book notes that antifa groups are often secretive. What are the risks and benefits of this approach in combating extremist groups?
Liberalism and Radicalism: How does the text address the tension between liberal democratic principles (like free speech) and the desire to stop hate speech/actions?
Applicability Today: To what extent are the strategies outlined in the book applicable to the current political landscape in the U.S. and Europe?
Support & Community: Beyond street-level conflict, how does the book describe the importance of community support, intelligence gathering, and tracking in anti-fascist work? This is a meeting for anyone interested in this book by Mark Bray. Read and discuss, or if you haven't read it yet, come hang out with like-minded people and get the cliff-notes! This bookstore has amazing Turkish desserts, coffee/tea/espresso, sandwiches, and other dishes available for purchase. Come hungry for good food and great conversation!
