β„πŸ”πŸ₯Ά It's going to be cold. It's going to be exhausting. It's going to be an adventure.

😨😱🀯 This tour is for experienced hikers with good equipment.

🧭 You can find the route on Komoot.

πŸš† Getting there: HBX from Berlin to Ilsenburg – arrival in Ilsenburg at 10:29 a.m. I will be boarding at Berlin Alexanderplatz. According to my information, you can take the train with the Deutschlandticket.

Please check your train connection the day before again, because German Railway Company is doing some minor changes on the track caused by a damage on the track.

πŸš† Return journey: HBX from Ilsenburg to Berlin – departure from Ilsenburg at 5:31 p.m. There are later alternatives if you miss the train.

🌳 Description

  • We will hike from Ilsenburg (240 m) to Brocken (1,140 m) and back: 26 km, 900 m elevation gain, 900 m elevation loss.
  • It will be strenuous! Muscle soreness is very likely.
  • On the Brocken, it will (probably) be cold, windy and snow-covered; in the valley, it will be warmer and without (?) snow.
  • We will only take short breaks to eat or drink something. We will stay on the Brocken for about 15 minutes, then it will get too cold.
  • Our pace is about 4 km/h – that's comparable to a pace of 5.5 to 6 km/h on flat ground.

If you don't catch the train back in time, there are other trains back. However, they are more inconvenient.

Besides, it's really about the athletic aspect of the tour – even if the snow, the forest and the view are really beautiful! You have 2 minutes to look around and take photos.

  • Recommendations:
  • Bring sufficient water (2-3 litres), food, and hot tea or coffee if desired. There are no refreshments available along the way.
  • The restaurant at Brocken is crowded with tourists arriving by train. We will not have time to stop there.
  • Therefore: Bring plenty of water! Bring plenty of food!
  • Bring cash: 5 EUR for the organisation plus some for any expenses along the way. In Germany, cash is king.
  • Clothing – layer up: Wear multiple layers, lots of thin layers with merino wool. A down jacket is worth bringing for the summit, but it will be too warm on the ascent.
  • Rain gear (just in case)!
  • Magnesium, electrolytes.
  • Blister plasters, if necessary.
  • Waterproof hiking boots!
  • Spikes, if necessary, in case it is slippery.
  • Hiking sticks / Trecking poles.
