Field Trip: Cape May, NJ
Details
Cape May has the potential to have it all; there can be plenty of species of all kinds and lots of them. We are hoping a cold front will bring a wave a warblers and flycatchers our way. The first pulses of raptor migration have started and there are also migrating shorebirds and a good assortment of breeders with an affinity for the ocean.
Difficulty: Easy-Medium. There will be multiple short walks on flat terrain. Possible we will walk stretches on soft sand but you have the choice to stay back for such walks. It is a long day; end time is a rough estimate. We'll be driving for at least five hours back-and-forth and be out in direct sunlight with, often, biting insects in tow. Bring sun screen; sun hat; cool, long-sleeved clothing; and insect repellent. Places like Higbee's Beach might be thick with ticks.
Transportation: We will car pool. There will be plenty of time to get to know your fellow birders during the drive.
Food: We will eat in the field. Bring food and plenty of fluid. A small cooler might be a good idea.
Equipment: If you have a spotting scope, bring it. If you don't, you can always borrow a peak through the scopes we end up bringing.
