Monitoring Purple Martins
Learn how LVAS volunteers help Purple Martins breed and monitor their dispersal in a morning talk at Beltzville State Park.
LVAS volunteers Dave Dawson, Tim Kita and Mike McCartney will demonstrate how the club's Purple Martin towers are set up and maintained. Participants will get a look inside the nesting gourds as this year's brood is counted in a weekly inspection.
Tim Kita will talk about the extensive banding program that is now under way and what we hope to discover about martin behavior.
The event will start at 10 a.m. July 15 at Pavillion #2 at Beltzville State Park,
2950 Pohopoco Dr., Lehighton, PA 18235.
Pavillion #2 is at the far end of the wooded picnic area in the main day use area of the park. Turn right as you approach the beach facilities and drive to the very end of the parking lot that stretches past the picnic woods.
In case of inclement weather the talk will be held Thursday July 17.
The event is sponsored by the park. It is free and open to the public.
