🌕Fun facts about the Sturgeon Moon!

The August full moon is traditionally named after the lake sturgeon, the largest freshwater fish in North America. Indigenous Algonquin and Anishinaabe peoples living around the Great Lakes found that these fish were most easily caught and most abundant during the month of August.

For the best viewing experience, look to the eastern sky on the evening of Thursday, August 27, shortly after sunset. The moon will appear full and brilliant to the naked eye for about two nights before and after its peak. Because of the partial eclipse, observers will see a large portion of the moon's surface take on a distinctive reddish-orange tint as it moves through the Earth's shadow.
