Nana by Émile Zola

Details

We shift from one Zola masterpiece to another; a story of coal miners in northern France, to the story of a sexually magnetic high-class prostitute who sweeps through Paris.

Nana.

Nana (1880) is the daughter of the alcoholic, Gervaise Macquart and her cuckolded husband, Monsieur Coupeau (L'Assommoir 1877). Another Zola novel focusing on the Macquart line of the family tree, which tends towards alcholism, degeneracy, and excess. This novel may represent the crowning masterpiece of the Rougon-Macquart. We'll see how it ranks amoungst our group of Zolaian scholars.

Oxford World's Classics remains our baseline translation. Nana is translated by Helen Constantine (who may be the best translator of the Oxford Zola team).
