Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

I was on the point of crying at her, "Don't you hear them?" The dusk was repeating them in a persistent whisper all around us, in a whisper that seemed to swell menacingly like the first whisper of a rising wind. "The horror! the horror!"

Before moving on from Conrad, let's reread Heart of Darkness, an early modernist masterpiece, depicting a journey into the heart of the Belgian Congo. Marlow and Mr. Kurtz's venture into the impenetrable jungle represents a trial both physical and moral.
