A Night of Philosophy, organized within 2016 World Philosophy Day, is a nocturnal happening that aims to create the conditions of an encounter between philosophy, art and the general public.

On 18 November, in collaboration with the French National Commission for UNESCO, the seventh edition of “A Night of Philosophy” will be organized at UNESCO Headquarters.

Built on a concept successfully deployed on previous occasions by the French philosopher and stage director Mériam Korichi, in Paris, London, Berlin, New York and Helsinki, A Night of Philosophy, in its standard format, is a 12-hour event open to the general public.

It involves a large number of philosophers providing a panorama of Philosophy in the world today and new and enriched perspectives on the missions of UNESCO. The anniversaries of Aristotle and Leibniz, and the overarching theme of tolerance, will be given specific prominence in the programme.

The idea is to occupy simultaneously the available spaces of the UNESCO buildings, to propose “Philosophy à la carte” in interaction with the strong visual and architectural identity(ies) of UNESCO Headquarters.

The event will use multiple parallel spaces, and include traditional philosophy lectures and a range of more innovative activities, such as commissioned art installations, live performances, film and video screenings intended to explore philosophy in creative, aesthetic, playful and provocative ways. Indeed, the numerous spaces of UNESCO Headquarters are as many possibilities of philosophical practices and itineraries.

What is at stake is to shift boundaries and question divisions, by way of inviting each participant to think actively about today’s world; to position the public (physically in Paris and in the world through digital communication) at the core of the event.

Philosophy at UNESCO opens up to the public, offering a moment of suspended time, an interruption, pushing the limits of common conventions, confronting and hybridising artistic visions and philosophical conceptions and elaborations.

Free entrance.
