Perfect Winter Food—Bollito Misto

Perfect Winter Food—Bollito Misto

Details

The weather is terrible, but there is a cure—Bollito Misto, the great simmered dinner of Northern Italy. Marcella Hazan feared that once day this dish would die out, to become the stuff of legends, only talked about but never prepared. Luckily it has not turned out this way.

Poggio Trattoria (http://www.poggiotrattoria.com/) in Sausalito has revived this Northern Italian classic for our winter. And it sounds very promising indeed:

Evolving from the Nonna's kitchen, Bollito is a hearty meal of mixed boiled meats served during the cold winter months throughout Northern Italy. Chef Peter McNee recreates this traditional meal based upon memories living and traveling through Italy. Slowly simmered meats, such as housemade cotechino sausage, beef tongue, brisket, veal breast and oxtail will be carved tableside from Poggio's Bollito carello (cart). Condimenti made in house including:Bagnetto Verde (green sauce with parsley and garlic), Mostarda de Cremona and Horseradish Crema compliment the meats.

Check out this video (http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=view_from_the_bay/food_wine&id=6633239) of bollito misto in action. If you't feel like bollito misto, Poggio has an excellent selections of pastas and main courses to choose from. Check out their menu (http://www.poggiotrattoria.com/menus/store/poggio_dinner.pdf).
