Welcome to our second meeting of 2024! After Will starts us off with a discussion of machine learning, John will continue with an entertaining deep dive into optimized locking in databases (and how you can use it to your benefit as you work with data). We're excited to continue our 2024 momentum with night of machine learning discussion and learning about how databases may not work exactly the way you think they do! Will's title: "Practical and Understandable Machine Learning for Everyone"

Will's abstract: The Machine Learning talk will be adjusted based on the audience at the meeting and will be more like a conversation rather than a lecture. Questions to shift the conversation in any direction will be welcomed. There will be no formulas, no programing, but just light topics that might be interesting for everyone, including practical uses of ML, ML competitions prizes and awards, how addictive ML can be, is it difficult to learn ML and how long it will take, how difficult is it to monetize ML or AI, how can ML knowledge benefit current data scientists, job market in the area or lack of it, and so on. There will be a very short ML demonstration at the end, that will cover the well-known in the ML community Titanic small data set. The machine learning model will predict, based on some of our personal data, what would be our probability of survival on Titanic.

Will's bio: I was born in Eastern Europe many winters ago. I lived in Lexington for the last quarter of a century. I have three Associate’s and two Bachelor’s degrees in the fields of Computer Science, Finance, Real Estate, Nuclear Medicine Technology, and Management. I already forgot what I’ve learned. None of the degrees contributed to my knowledge and experience in Machine Learning. I studied extensively and full time Machine Learning on my own for the last four years, and I built and constantly improve an AI software package in Python for the derivatives (options) markets.

John's title: "Exploring Optimized Locking"

John's abstract: When updating data in SQL Server, operators run the gamut of incurring issues if not done correctly. Sometimes, they manifested as lock escalation, the dreaded blocking, disastrous deadlocks, or poor performance. With the release of Optimized Locking in Azure SQL Database, issues are mitigated while helping to enhance performance and transactional concurrency. In this session, we'll embark on a journey into this new capability, designed to revolutionize concurrency control and improve transaction throughput. We'll examine the underlying mechanism while providing insights into its architecture, implementation, and best practices for maximizing performance.
