LIST POEMS & PARATAXIS
List poems are a fantastic way of bringing unexpected words, ideas and images into our work. They thrive on ambiguity and are rarely narrative based. Parataxis Is a poetic form where two or more images or ideas, usually very different to each other, are juxtaposed without a clear connection. Both techniques can be incorporated into more conventional forms or for generating new ideas.
MEETING FORMAT
1 INTRODUCTIONS & GUIDELINES
2 PREPARED WRITING
Please bring along a short piece writing you would like feedback on.
OR
Bring along work done before the meeting relating to the theme of the workshop. For this LIST POEM workshop please compile a list of at least eight different things. Each item on the list should be a short phrase or description no more than four words long. You could record 8 items on a walk, or in separate parts of the house or what you find in front of you over the course of eight minutes, eight hours or eight days. Some could be physical objects others emotions. But be precise and don’t go over the four words per item limit.
(NB: There is no pressure to do either of these things, or to read it aloud if you don’t want to).
3 WORKSHOP: Part One
We’ll read some examples of list poems and poems that use parataxis. Then we’ll do some short exercises to generate more of our own lists.
SHORT BREAK
4 WORKSHOP: Part Two
Using either/or our prepared writing or workshop lists we’ll look at writing some of our own list/parataxis poems.
