The route is mostly flat: it starts off on asphalt next to Lake Neusiedl, then becomes hillier and enters the forest after the Hungarian border. The road just before Sopron is rather unattractive for a short stretch, but the town centre itself, which is our destination, is very appealing.
It is not advisable to arrive by car, as the start and finish are quite far apart and the train to Vienna does not go via Rust. We therefore recommend the following train connection for your journey:

There are no places to stop for refreshments along the way. So please bring something to eat and drink with you, and of course clothing suitable for the weather. In the event of continuous rain or gale-force winds, the hike will be cancelled 24 hours in advance. (watch this space for communication)
