Eco Homo: João Pedro Rodrigues' "Fogo-Fátuo" ("Will-o'-the-Wisp"), 2020

We're back! After a long hiatus, the Criterion Channel Chat and LGBTQ Cinema & Culture groups are starting up again for a limited engagement, and we're joining forces to catch up on some important queer films, all currently streaming on the Criterion Channel service!

First on the list is Portuguese director João Pedro Rodrigues' "pornoganda" film, Fogo-Fátuo (listed on the Criterion Channel with the technically accurate, but much less connotative English title "Will-o'-the-Wisp"). It poses the audacious question: "can ecological awareness/activism be horny?" For Rodriguez the answer is an unqualified "yes!" As conceptually ambitious as it is sexually explicit, Fogo-Fátuo defies any easy categorization, but it offers plenty of provocative material for what will certainly be a very lively discussion.
