What is Humanism?
Humanism is a philosophy that relies on reason, critical thinking and compassion to discern how to reach the goal of universal human flourishing. To flourish,
humans need a reasonable level of prosperity, a sense of community and meaning, a healthy environment and a moral code that promotes these goals.
Humanist philosophies have evolved over the centuries in the West. It can be traced back to the ancient Greek philosophers, the Renaissance, Enlightenment, and the development of modern science. Humanistic philosophies have also developed in many non-Western cultures. Humans have struggled over the centuries to develop
naturalistic ways of viewing reality rather than those based on superstition or supernatural revelation.
