In the Enlightenment of the17th and 18th centuries, some philosophers emphasized the importance of reason in understanding reality. This led to modern science and non-theistic philosophies such as humanism. We will briefly review this historic progression and examine recent advances in neurobiology on how the brain constructs a person’s beliefs. We will consider what happens when new information that does not fit this worldview is encountered. This will help us understand when reason is, or is not, utilized by a person to modify their beliefs. Will this understanding help promote rational thinking in the age of misinformation?
This discussion will be led by Jim Barnett, Ph.D. Jim’s career was in biomedical science and he studied humanism at the Humanist Institute. This event is free. Those who are interested in doing so will go to a nearby restaurant for lunch after the discussion.
