The Deep by Rivers Solomon is a novella inspired by the song of the same name by the rap group Clipping, exploring an underwater society of water-breathing descendants of pregnant enslaved African women thrown overboard. The story follows Yetu, the historian who holds the traumatic memories for her people, as she flees to the surface world to escape the burden, discovering her own past and the future of her people in the process. It's a work of Afrofuturism that blends fantasy, folklore, and history, and has received critical acclaim, including a Lambda Literary Award.
