LIBERAL LADIES BOOK CLUB JUNE 21

Details
Good Afternoon all,
I apologize for not doing this sooner, but I have been out of pocket for a week. Now that the Colonial Golf Tournament is over I can get back to my regular life.
We have lots of information this month, besides our book club!!!
First of all, we are back at our regular hostess's home. Everyone is welcome to bring snacks or wine (you have to take home your leftovers!) Coffee, iced tea and water are provided.
To protect her privacy, I will send location information once we have RSVPs
Our May meeting was great! The discussion was very lively; The Women struck a lot of chords in all of us, I think. We all thought the best part was the strong bonds the main characters developed in the turmoil of a field hospital in wartime. Our perspectives were all over the map due to our individual knowledge of Vietname.
The book for June is “Furious Hours”, by Casey Cep,
This “superbly written true-crime story” (The New York Times Book Review) masterfully brings together the tales of a serial killer in 1970s Alabama and of Harper Lee, the beloved author of To Kill a Mockingbird, who tried to write his story.
Reverend Willie Maxwell was a rural preacher accused of murdering five of his family members, but with the help of a savvy lawyer, he escaped justice for years until a relative assassinated him at the funeral of his last victim. Despite hundreds of witnesses, Maxwell’s murderer was acquitted—thanks to the same attorney who had previously defended the reverend himself. Sitting in the audience during the vigilante’s trial was Harper Lee, who spent a year in town reporting on the Maxwell case and many more trying to finish the book she called The Reverend.
Cep brings this remarkable story to life, from the horrifying murders to the courtroom drama to the racial politics of the Deep South, while offering a deeply moving portrait of one of our most revered writers.
The Fort Worth Library has audio and book versions at this time. It is available on Amazon in Kindle, audio and book form, and there is information for used copies as well.
Of course there is always Half Price Books.

Tarrant County Commissioners' Court
the Commissioners' Court debacle is nearing its end. It is likely the vote will be 3 to 2 in favor of Judge O'Hare's preferred map, which splits up Arlington and rearranges the map of Precincts 1 & 2. The purpose is to lock in a 4 to 1 Republican majority on the court; the proposed map will crack Precinct 2 and pack precinct 1. Judge O'Hare will achieve another goal: the ousting of Commissioner Simmons (Precinct 2) from the court. This is very personal as she is a thorn in his side and he wants to be rid of her. She cannot win in the new map. This is a very controversial mid-term redistricting effort which is totally unnecessary. The claim is that the Court was not redistricted in 2021, when in fact it was; it was determined that no boundary changes were needed, in compliance with redistricting rules.
If you can, attend Commissioners Court on June 3; you can sign up to speak, or complete an opinion form, You can also write letters to the Commissioners and the County Judge.
KERA has compiled a great reference file with plenty of information for letter composition. https://www.keranews.org/tags/tarrant-county-commissioners-court
This County web page has addresses and other info for contacting Commissioners and the County Judge. There are also videos of the Town Halls which were held in each precinct. https://www.tarrantcountytx.gov/en/commissioners-court.html
Whether you write or not, these videos are a clear portrait of what Judge O'Hare and the two Republican Commissioners want. Commissioners Court on June 3 will be broadcast live on YouTube .
Rest assured, there will be lawsuits which will probably be filed on June 4! Defending this mess will cost the county up into the millions of dollars.
