Join us for a figure painting from life and discover the timeless techniques of oil painting. Working from a professional nude model, you will learn how to:
- Use oil paints, solvents, and painting mediums
- Mix skin tones
- Use light and shadow to convey realism
- Capture the figure accurately from life

The workshop is structured over two intensive days, combining demonstration, guided practice, and individual instruction to support your progress step by step.

Day 1 (11am–4pm)
Working alongside John, you will prepare your canvas and create an underpainting. You will then learn how to mix colours and use the fat-over-lean technique while establishing the main shapes and values of the composition. The workshop finishes with guidance on how to keep brushes clean and store your work.

Day 2 (11am–4pm)
You will continue refining your painting, focusing on finer details with the goal of bringing it toward completion. John will also give you advice on how to choose your own oil paints, brushes, and canvases. There is the option to continue working on your painting at home, as reference photos of the model will be available upon request.

Workshop Approach
This beginner-friendly workshop is taught step by step through live demonstrations and individual instruction, making it ideal for those new to oil painting as well as artists looking to refine their painting skills or explore a different way of working. About the Tutor
Born in Paris and raised in New York, John studied at the School of Visual Arts before pursuing a career as an art director and oil painter. He employs traditional oil painting methods while also painting alla prima. Influenced by Balthus, Degas, and traditional Japanese prints, his figurative work explores the psychology of the model and the viewer’s gaze. “I am determined to help every one of my students create compelling pieces of art, learn the skills of the past, and combine them with each student’s modern sensibilities. I am looking forward to the amazing work we will do together.” – John Kelly
