Discussion Evening - Narcissism
Details
Narcissus, lost in admiration of his reflection on the smooth water, found refuge in this image, which protected him, perilously, from a tormented self hidden beneath. Then, as the water began to ripple, unsettling the fragile mask he had so painstakingly built and maintained, he reacted excessively, blaming the water for confronting him with his demons.
Narcissism, resonating in societies that overly cultivate individualism, has led to a rising tide of normalised and justified narcissistic behaviours. It manifests as emotional coldness, an aversion to feedback, an obsessive concern with maintaining a positive image, and an excessive quest for attention and validation to sustain self-esteem. We speak of a "narcissism epidemic," obscuring the distinctions between a personality trait, a disorder, and/or a result of sociocultural influences.
Curious Thinkers joins forces with Munich Social Activities for a unique exploration into the complexities of narcissism. How? By blending our distinct styles; we merge and alternate between personal, heartfelt narratives and thoughtful, analytical discussions that challenge our understanding. We will dive into the following questions:
- How do you personally define narcissism? Do you see it as primarily a personality trait, a mental disorder, a societal symptom, or something else entirely?
- Do you believe narcissistic tendencies are innate, acquired, or a combination of both? What experiences or observations have led you to this conclusion?
- In what ways do you think our culture and society might inadvertently promote or reinforce narcissistic behaviour? Are there any societal changes or movements you believe could counteract this trend?
- How do you differentiate between healthy self-love/self-esteem and narcissism?
- Considering the influence of cultural backgrounds on personality traits, how do you think narcissism is viewed or manifests differently across various cultures?
- Do you believe narcissistic tendencies or narcissistic personality disorder can be 'cured' or significantly changed?
Looking forward to delving into this challenging topic, and exploring the richness of the perspectives that emerge from our collaborative meetup groups :-)
