Discussion Evening - Love
Details
"Love is an endless mystery, for it has nothing else to explain it". Tagore's words tenderly capture the ineffable power of love to disarm words and reason, both of which vainly strive to describe it. Love simultaneously empowers and disarms us, and propels us high into the skies, making us fly even as it clips our wings. It may well be that the true essence of love unveils itself only in the act of loving, a journey where each step unfurls as a verse in an everlasting poem.
Similar to a prism through which the light of our experiences and desires shines, breaking into countless colours - each hue representing a different aspect of love. From the passionate reds of Eros, romantic love, to the serene blues of Philia, platonic love, the spectrum is vast and varied.
As we explore these colours, let's reflect on how they shape our understanding of love, as follows:
- What does love mean to you ?
- How do you reconcile its scientific explanation (a cocktail of chemicals in the brain, incl. dopamine and oxytocin) with your personal experiences of love?
- How do you see cultural influences shaping your own perceptions of love?
- Plato suggested that love helps us recall the beauty we saw before we were born, while Nietzsche believed love to be a desire for possession. Which of these views, if any, resonates with you, and why?
- From a biological standpoint, love has been seen as a mechanism for survival through bonding and reproduction. How does this evolutionary perspective fit with our modern understanding of love?
- How do you navigate the fine line between self-love and selfishness in a society that often values individualism?
- Love is often accompanied by vulnerability and sometimes pain. Philosophers have suggested that this pain is a necessary part of deep emotional connection. How do you view the relationship between love and pain?
Looking forward to delving into the intricate depths of love together!
📜 To foster a fruitful, respectful, and inspiring conversation together, please be mindful of the following ground rules:
- Listen respectfully, without interrupting.
- Listen actively and with an ear to understanding others' views.
- Comment on ideas, not individuals.
- Commit to learning, not debating.
- Comment in order to share information, not to persuade.
- Avoid blame, speculation, and inflammatory language.
- Allow everyone the chance to speak.
- Avoid no-shows and last-minute drop-outs to ensure fairness to those on the waitlist and the organizer. Be advised that a no-show or a drop-out may result in your exclusion from the next meetup.
- Refrain from attending the event if you're not on the attendee list. This ensures fairness to those on the waitlist and helps the organizer.
- Be mindful and present during the discussion. Avoid using your phone; after all, the beauty lies in face-to-face social interaction.
🆕 New Venue for Curious Thinkers
🏠 Our upcoming gathering has found a cosy new home at EineWeltHaus! Instead of meeting in a noisy bar, we'll have our own quiet room with a perfect atmosphere for our exchanges and inspiration to flourish.
💰 To support this change, I'll be asking for a small contribution of €5 per person for the rental space and the fees for the Meetup. This move means we won't need to worry about bar tabs or finding a quiet corner amidst the bustle.
