(Re-)Reading The Selfish Gene

Details

Richard Dawkin's The Selfish Gene has been and continues to be a touchstone work of both popular science writing and science itself, and has been instrumental in advancing our understanding of the evolution of life on earth (a few years ago, the Royal Society voted it the single most influential science book of all time).

This book has arisen a number of times during book club events (yeah, ok, I'm the guy who keeps mentioning it!), and I recently took another look at it. Although there have been multiple revolutions in the biological sciences since this originally appeared, I think that many of the ideas that Dawkins presents are still valid and worth discussing.

note: We will touch on topics such as evolution, altruism and morality, so expect to discuss these in the context of this book.

Also, while the original book has not been edited, Dawkins has added an epilogue and forwards; we will be reading the 40th anniversary edition (also available as an audiobook) (if you only have an earlier edition, let me know and I can post the epilogue).
