MongoDB Aggregation Fundamentals in Practice [Free Meetup]
Details
The MongoDB Aggregation Framework provides a powerful way to query, transform, combine, and analyze data stored in MongoDB collections. In this practical meetup, we will explore the fundamental concepts behind aggregation pipelines and learn how documents flow through a sequence of processing stages. We will begin by examining the structure of an aggregation pipeline and the role of MongoDB’s query optimizer. We will then explore essential stages such as `$match`, `$sort`, `$limit`, `$group`, `$lookup`, `$unwind`, `$project`, and `$out`. Through clear explanations and practical code examples, you will learn how each stage transforms the documents it receives and passes the results to the next stage. The meetup will also cover common aggregation use cases, including filtering documents, calculating totals and averages, flattening arrays, reshaping results, joining data from multiple collections, and writing processed data into a new collection. Beyond syntax, we will discuss important performance practices, such as filtering data early, placing index-supported stages near the beginning of the pipeline, choosing the correct stage order, and using explain plans to understand pipeline execution. We will demonstrate how to create aggregation pipelines programmatically in JavaScript and visually in MongoDB Compass. This meetup is suitable for developers with basic experience using MongoDB.
Come with questions; there will be time for discussion. Prior knowledge is not required. Whether you're brand new to MongoDB and Semantic Search or already using it daily, you'll leave with practical tools you can apply right away.
