What's your favourite savoury snack? Whatever it is, there's no doubt snacking can be addictive. Snacks are engineered to make your mouth water and give you just the right amount of crunch. The salty taste and artificial flavours make them "hyperpalatable" - so they taste super good. They also contain high amounts of calories, and cause major blood sugar imbalances. These are known factors that can cause food cravings. However, the biggest contributor to addictive-like eating behaviour is your brain. Addictive-like eating behaviour involves a lot more than just a lack of willpower. There are biochemical reasons why some people lose control over their consumption. The brain has a reward centre, which lights up and starts secreting dopamine and other feel-good chemicals when we eat. Eating processed junk food releases massive amounts of feel-good chemicals, compared to unprocessed foods. This yields a much more powerful "reward" in the brain. This reward centre explains why most of us "enjoy" eating. It makes sure that we eat enough food to get all the energy and nutrients that we need. Understanding all this is no use, unless we are willing to act towards positive change and take responsibility for our health. There is a simple way we can change the brains response; it is totally backed by science and takes minutes to do. So, bring your snacks along and we will put it to the test. Whether it’s Walkers crisps or sausage rolls, Doritos or Hula Hoops we can make the change that will stop our cravings for good and allow us to take charge of our food choices.
