Abstract: Functional programming can provide many benefits to developers and business leaders when compared to the imperative styles many languages have offered. The reduced code base size, testability, and compact expressions characteristic of functional languages can increase confidence that applications will operate as intended and influence outcomes for the business.

Even knowing the benefits that can be gained, the shift to a functional programming style can be daunting. Since code can be viewed as a manifestation of internal reasoning processes, utilizing new syntax offers an opportunity to explore the foundational principles that shape our thinking.

In this presentation, we’ll learn some high-level concepts that make functional programming appealing and reflect on the transitional journey, sharing lessons learned and lightbulb moments along the way, as I remapped my thought patterns to support an unfamiliar paradigm.

Bio: Lauren Phipps is a senior software engineer at Gravie, using functional programming techniques regularly in her work. She’s fascinated by how technology interacts with other disciplines. After she completed her undergrad in computer science, she obtained a Master’s in Critical and Creative Thinking to further explore the many layers of tech.
